The CHICAGO-LATROBE 70138 is a jobber-length drill bit in wire gauge size No. 38, with a decimal diameter of 0.1015 inches. Built from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended surface hardness and heat resistance compared to uncoated HSS tooling. The 118-degree standard point angle is ground for general-purpose drilling, and the web-thinned, tapered web construction reduces thrust requirements at entry. Overall length is 2.5 inches with a 1.4375-inch spiral flute length. This bit is sold individually and is suited for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals working with ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
The 70138 is designed for drilling into cast iron and steel in general-purpose shop, field, and production environments. The straight-cylindrical shank with a diameter of 0.1015 inches seats in standard drill chucks without adapters. The regular spiral flute geometry and right-hand cutting direction make it compatible with conventional drill press, hand drill, and CNC drilling setups where a No. 38 wire gauge hole is required. The two-flute design promotes chip evacuation in typical through-hole and blind-hole applications on light to medium stock.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber-length drill bit compatible with any standard drill chuck accepting a 0.1015-inch straight-cylindrical shank, including drill presses, hand drills, and CNC drilling machines configured for wire gauge No. 38 tooling. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or trade professionals familiar with rotary cutting tool safety. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before drilling. Always power down and de-energize the machine before changing bits. Do not exceed the recommended RPM range for the workpiece material and bit diameter, and use appropriate cutting fluid for steel applications to manage heat buildup.
