The CHICAGO-LATROBE 70120 is a jobber length twist drill bit in wire gauge size 20, with a decimal diameter of 0.1610 inches. Built from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this bit handles repeated use in production and maintenance drilling without rapid edge degradation. The 118-degree standard point angle suits a wide range of metal cutting tasks. The two-flute spiral design evacuates chips efficiently, and the tapered web with web thinning reduces thrust required at entry. The overall length is 3.25 inches with a 2.125-inch flute length. It weighs approximately 0.2 pounds. Licensed machinists, maintenance mechanics, and sheet metal workers are the typical installers.
The 70120 is rated for use in cast iron and steel as primary workpiece materials, making it appropriate for general-purpose drilling in HVAC, plumbing, electrical rough-in, and light fabrication work. The straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard keyed or keyless drill chucks. Series 150T designates Chicago-Latrobe general-purpose jobber geometry, built to DIN 338 standards. The TiN coating increases surface hardness and reduces friction at the cutting edge, extending service intervals compared to uncoated HSS tooling in moderate-duty applications.
Designed as a general-purpose OEM-style jobber drill for use in any standard drill press, hand drill, or CNC spindle accepting a 0.1610-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for drilling cast iron and steel workpieces.
Install in a properly sized drill chuck, ensuring the shank is fully seated and the chuck is tightened securely before operation. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent rotation and bit breakage. Apply cutting fluid when drilling steel to reduce heat buildup and extend coating life. Inspect the cutting edge before each use and replace bits showing chipping or dulling to maintain hole tolerance.
