The CHICAGO-LATROBE 69868 is an 8-piece reduced shank cobalt drill bit set designed for metalworking and general-purpose drilling applications. The set covers a size range from 9/16 inch to 1 inch in 1/16-inch step increments, with all bits ground to a 118-degree split-point tip for self-centering starts that eliminate the need for a center punch. All shanks are reduced to a 1/2-inch diameter, allowing these large-diameter bits to run in standard 1/2-inch chuck capacity drills and drill presses. The cobalt construction with gold finish provides heat resistance suited to harder steels and stainless. Licensed HVAC techs, machinists, electricians, plumbers, and general tradespeople who drill into metal regularly will find this set covers the larger hole sizes most often needed on the job.
This set is built for right-hand cutting in metalworking and multipurpose drilling scenarios. Typical uses include drilling through structural steel, plate steel, stainless steel, and other hard ferrous and non-ferrous materials where standard high-speed steel bits wear quickly. The jobber-length geometry and 3-1/8-inch flute length suit most drill press and handheld drill setups encountered in fabrication shops, mechanical rooms, and field service work. Bits store in an included metal case for protection and organization on the job site or in a service van.
Designed for use with standard 1/2-inch chuck capacity drill presses and handheld drills. The reduced shank design allows all 8 bit sizes to seat in a common 1/2-inch chuck without requiring a larger-capacity machine.
Cobalt drill bits should be run at appropriate speeds for the material being drilled — slower surface speeds are recommended for harder steels to prevent tip overheating. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling ferrous metals to extend bit life, even though through-coolant is not supported by these bits. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent movement. Wear appropriate eye protection in accordance with applicable shop safety standards.
