The CHICAGO-LATROBE 69040 is a jobber length drill bit in wire gauge size 40, equivalent to 0.0980 inches in decimal diameter. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this bit is engineered for heavy-duty drilling applications in steel alloy and similar ferrous materials. It features a 135-degree split point for fast, self-centering starts without a center punch, and a parabolic flute geometry that efficiently evacuates chips and reduces heat buildup during deeper cuts. The 2-3/8 inch overall length fits standard drill chucks on benchtop drill presses, hand drills, and CNC equipment. It is part of the Series 150DH line, designed for production-volume use by machinists, maintenance mechanics, and fabricators.
This drill bit is suited for precision drilling in steel alloy workpieces in both production shop and maintenance environments. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard three-jaw chucks. The parabolic flute design makes it particularly effective in deeper holes where chip packing and heat are common concerns. The 135-degree split point eliminates the need for a center punch on flat stock and reduces walking on curved surfaces. It is sold individually, with a minimum order quantity of 12 units, making it practical for stocking in tool cribs or service vans that demand consistent small-diameter hole quality.
Designed as a Series 150DH OEM-style jobber length drill bit for use with standard three-jaw chucks accepting a 0.0980-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece material is steel alloy.
Installation and use of small-diameter drill bits should be performed by machinists or qualified maintenance personnel familiar with drilling equipment and feeds-and-speeds for high speed steel tooling. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before drilling into the workpiece. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel alloy to extend bit life and maintain tolerance. Avoid excessive feed pressure on small-diameter bits, as it is the leading cause of breakage in wire-gauge sizes.
