The CHICAGO-LATROBE 68825 is a taper length, high speed steel drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and other non-ferrous metals. It measures 25/64 inches (0.3906 inches) in diameter with a 7-inch overall length and a 5-5/8-inch flute length. The 135-degree split point geometry is self-centering, reducing the need for a center punch and helping prevent walking on entry. A parabolic flute profile improves chip evacuation during deep-hole drilling. The tanged shank provides positive drive engagement in compatible chucks and holders. This bit is suited for production and maintenance environments where standard jobber length bits lack the reach needed for deeper cuts.
The 68825 is used in metal fabrication shops, maintenance facilities, and industrial settings where drilling into alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and non-ferrous metals is routine. The taper length design bridges the gap between standard jobber bits and long-series bits, giving additional reach without sacrificing rigidity. It is commonly run in drill presses, milling machines, and CNC machining centers. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces thrust requirements, making it practical for both manual and powered feed setups.
Designed for use in drill presses, milling machines, and CNC machining centers that accept a tanged shank in the 25/64-inch (0.3906-inch) diameter range. Rated for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and non-ferrous metals per Series 120DH application data.
A licensed machinist or qualified metalworking technician should verify spindle speed and feed rate before use, as HSS tooling is sensitive to overheating without proper coolant or feeds. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent movement that can snap smaller drill bits. Inspect the tanged shank and chuck or collet for wear before seating the bit to ensure full positive engagement. Do not exceed the recommended cutting parameters for the material being drilled.
