The CHICAGO-LATROBE 68808 is a taper length drill bit designed for demanding metal drilling applications in industrial and trade environments. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, it measures 0.1250 inches in diameter with an overall length of 5.125 inches. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on contact, allowing self-centering starts without a center punch. A parabolic flute design improves chip evacuation at higher feed rates, making it well-suited for production drilling. The tapered web configuration adds rigidity across the longer flute length. This bit is typically installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working with structural or precision metal stock.
The 68808 is suited for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and other non-ferrous metals. Its taper length body — longer than a jobber bit but shorter than a long series — provides added reach for deeper holes while maintaining lateral stiffness. The right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional drill press, lathe, and handheld power tool setups. The tanged shank seats securely in taper-shank holders and drill chucks commonly found on floor-standing and bench-top drill presses. This bit fits production shops, maintenance departments, and field fabrication work where a longer reach is required without sacrificing control.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use taper length drill bit compatible with alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and non-ferrous metal workpieces. Fits standard drill press chucks and taper-shank holders accepting a 0.1250-inch tanged shank.
Install in a drill press, lathe tailstock, or power tool chuck rated for the intended feed and speed. Secure the tanged shank fully in the holder before operation. Power down and lock out the machine before changing bits or adjusting chuck position. Use appropriate cutting fluid for steel applications to extend tool life and maintain hole quality.
