The CHICAGO-LATROBE 55454 is a reduced shank twist drill bit designed for portable drilling operations in metal, wood, and cast iron. The bit measures 27/32 inches (0.8438 inches decimal) in cutting diameter and runs a 1/2-inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to seat in standard 1/2-inch chucks even though the cutting diameter is larger. Constructed from high speed steel with a coated finish, this Series 190 bit handles general-purpose drilling across a range of workpiece materials. It is a two-flute, right-hand cut design with a 118-degree standard point angle and a regular spiral flute configuration. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and general tradespeople reach for this bit when a full-shank bit of this diameter would not fit the available tooling.
The 55454 is suited for portable drilling applications where a reduced shank is necessary to bridge the gap between a large cutting diameter and a standard 1/2-inch chuck. Primary workpiece material is wood, with secondary capability in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, and wood composites. The 6-inch overall length and 3-1/8-inch flute length give it enough reach for most through-hole and deep-hole tasks in fabrication, maintenance, and field service environments.
Designed as a general-purpose reduced shank drill bit compatible with portable drills and drill presses fitted with 1/2-inch chucks. Suitable for use in wood, alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron workpieces per manufacturer specifications.
Install and remove this bit with all power sources disconnected or the tool trigger locked out per standard lockout/tagout practice. Seat the shank fully into the chuck and tighten securely before drilling. Ensure the drill press table or workpiece is firmly clamped before starting a cut. Wear appropriate eye and hand protection when drilling metal or cast iron workpieces.
