The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54088 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding materials. Built to M42 cobalt steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this bit delivers extended tool life and heat resistance in applications where standard high-speed steel bits wear prematurely. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without center-punching and reduces walking on hard surfaces. At 2 inches overall length with a 1-inch spiral flute, it handles typical jobber-depth holes in stainless steel, alloy steel, and similarly tough workpiece materials. Licensed machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators reach for this bit when cutting ferrous metals in production or field repair settings.
The 54088 is sized at wire gauge number 48, equivalent to 0.0760 inches in decimal. Its straight-cylindrical shank seats in standard drill chucks without modification. Install in a drill press, CNC machine, or hand drill with a chuck rated for the 0.0760-inch shank diameter. Secure the shank fully in the chuck jaws before operation. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or edge rounding is observed to prevent work-hardening of the hole entrance.
