The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54086 is a heavy-duty jobber-length drill bit designed for drilling into steel alloy and similar ferrous materials. Built from high speed steel (HSS) and coated with titanium nitride (TiN), it delivers improved surface hardness and extended tool life compared to uncoated HSS. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on contact and lowers the thrust required to start a hole. At 2-5/8 inches overall length with a 7/64-inch diameter, this bit fits standard drill chucks and is sized for precision work in tight or moderate clearance applications. It is suited for machinists, HVAC technicians, plumbers, and electricians who need reliable hole placement in metal components.
The 54086 is used in production drilling, maintenance, and field service applications where accurate, clean holes in steel alloy workpieces are required. The parabolic flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation, reducing heat buildup and the risk of chip packing in deeper holes. It is a practical choice for drilling through sheet metal, bracket stock, pipe hangers, and structural components encountered in mechanical and electrical trades work. No coolant-through capability is present, so conventional cutting fluid or dry drilling practice applies.
Designed as an OEM-style jobber drill bit replacement for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 7/64-inch straight-cylindrical shank, with primary workpiece compatibility rated for steel alloy materials.
This bit is installed and operated by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals using handheld or bench-mounted drills. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck before operation and confirm the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent movement. Apply appropriate cutting fluid when drilling steel alloy to extend bit life and improve hole quality. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace if the split point or flute geometry is compromised.
