The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54071 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in tough materials including stainless steel and alloy steels. Built to M42 cobalt high-speed steel material grade and coated with titanium nitride (TiN), it delivers extended cutting life and improved heat resistance under sustained load. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and lowers thrust requirements at the start of the cut. At 5-3/8 inches overall length with a 27/64-inch diameter, this bit fits standard drill chucks and is sized for jobber-length reach in production and maintenance drilling applications. Machinists, pipefitters, and maintenance mechanics rely on this type of bit for precision hole-making in ferrous metals.
The 54071 is suited for drilling stainless steel, carbon steel, and similar hard ferrous workpiece materials in both shop and field environments. The regular spiral flute and web-thinned, tapered web geometry promote chip evacuation and reduce cutting resistance. This bit is built to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, making it appropriate for aerospace-adjacent, industrial, and heavy-duty maintenance applications where dimensional consistency and material grade documentation matter. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in keyed or keyless chucks without slippage during high-torque cuts.
Designed as a jobber-length replacement drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 27/64-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials listed by the manufacturer are stainless steel and steel.
Seat the straight-cylindrical shank fully in a keyed or keyless drill chuck and verify secure clamping before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat buildup, as this bit does not support through-coolant delivery. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or wear is observed to maintain hole-diameter tolerance. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine guarding requirements for drilling operations.
