The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54068 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in tough materials, including stainless steel and hardened steel. Built to Series 2550 standards, it features a 135-degree split point for fast penetration and reduced walking on hard surfaces. The M42 cobalt steel construction resists heat buildup during high-speed cutting, while the titanium nitride (TiN) coating extends edge life. With an overall length of 5-1/2 inches and a flute length of 4-1/16 inches, this bit handles a wide range of production and maintenance drilling tasks. It is sized at 7/16 inches diameter and meets DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J specifications.
This bit is suited for metal fabrication shops, maintenance facilities, and field service work where stainless steel, alloy steel, and other hard metals are regularly drilled. The 2-flute spiral design with regular spiral and web-thinned, tapered web geometry promotes chip evacuation and reduces thrust requirements. Electricians, pipefitters, millwrights, and general maintenance mechanics will find this bit appropriate for structural and mechanical drilling applications where standard HSS bits lose edge life prematurely.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use jobber drill bit for applications requiring a 7/16-inch diameter, straight-shank cobalt bit compatible with standard drill chucks and CNC drill press setups. Primary workpiece materials listed are stainless steel and steel.
Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in a properly sized drill chuck before operation. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat and extend bit life, even though this bit is not coolant-through rated. Allow the split point to self-center before applying full feed pressure. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use, as cobalt bits subjected to excessive heat or improper feed rates can chip rather than dull gradually.
