The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54066 is a jobber-length drill bit built for cutting through stainless steel, hardened steel, and other demanding materials. Made from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, the 54066 delivers extended tool life and heat resistance in high-cycle production and maintenance environments. It features a 135-degree split point for fast penetration and reduced walking on hard surfaces. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 3/8 inch in diameter and seats securely in standard drill chucks. Overall length is 5 inches with a flute length of 3.625 inches. This bit is part of Chicago-Latrobe Series 2550, a heavy-duty line rated for high-performance applications.
The 54066 is suited for metal fabrication shops, industrial maintenance, HVAC contractors drilling through structural steel and stainless components, pipefitters, and other trade professionals who regularly work with tough ferrous materials. The 2-flute spiral design with regular spiral type provides efficient chip evacuation in deep-hole drilling scenarios. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces thrust requirements and improves bite on hard materials. Typical applications include drilling pilot holes in stainless steel tubing, structural steel plate, and other ferrous stock where standard HSS bits fail prematurely.
Designed for use with any standard 3/8-inch keyed or keyless drill chuck. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel and steel per Series 2550 specifications. Conforms to NAS 907 Type J and DIN 338 standards.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists, maintenance technicians, or trade professionals using a corded drill, drill press, or magnetic-base drill. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck before operation and verify chuck is fully tightened. Use appropriate cutting fluid when drilling stainless steel to manage heat buildup and prolong bit life. Do not exceed the drill press or hand drill speed rating recommended for the workpiece material and bit diameter.
