The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54060 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in tough materials including stainless steel and alloy steel. Built to M42 cobalt material grade and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this bit runs cooler and holds an edge longer than standard high-speed steel alternatives. The 135-degree split point self-centers on contact, reducing walk-out and the need for a center punch. At 4-1/4 inches overall length with a 2-15/16-inch flute, it fits standard jobber-length drill chucks and is suited for hand-held drills, drill presses, and CNC applications. Licensed machinists, pipefitters, and HVAC fabricators reach for this bit when cutting sheet metal, structural steel, or stainless pipe flanges.
This bit is intended for use in metal fabrication, mechanical contracting, and maintenance environments where stainless steel, carbon steel, and similar hard workpiece materials are encountered. The straight-cylindrical shank at 9/32 inch diameter fits standard three-jaw chucks without adapters. Right-hand spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently during through-hole drilling. Install in a properly sized three-jaw chuck and confirm the shank is fully seated before operation. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat buildup and extend bit life, even though coolant-through is not supported by this bit internally. Operate at speeds appropriate for cobalt tooling in hard metals — consult the drill speed chart for the workpiece material and bit diameter. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace if chipping or dullness is observed to avoid work-hardening the hole entrance in stainless steel.
