The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54055 is a cobalt jobber length drill bit designed for demanding metal drilling applications in industrial and trade environments. Built to Series 2550 standards, it features a 135-degree split point for fast, self-centering starts without a center punch. The M42 cobalt steel construction is finished with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating to extend cutting life and resist heat buildup. At 13/64 inches (0.2031 inches decimal) in diameter with a 3-5/8 inch overall length and a 2-7/16 inch flute length, this bit suits production drilling where tight tolerances and consistent performance are required. It is a heavy-duty, high-performance tool appropriate for machinists, pipefitters, and fabricators.
The 54055 is intended for drilling stainless steel and general steel in production and maintenance settings. The right-hand spiral flute design with web thinning reduces thrust and chip packing when working through harder alloys. The straight cylindrical shank accepts standard 3-jaw drill chucks on benchtop drill presses, magnetic base drills, and handheld power drills. Its NAS 907 Type J and DIN 338 compliance makes it appropriate for aerospace, structural, and mechanical fabrication work where specification-conforming tooling is required.
Designed for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel and steel. Diameter tolerance is -0.0007 to 0.0000 inches, placing this bit in the 0.2000 to 0.2500 inch drill bit size range.
Install the shank fully and securely into a keyed or keyless drill chuck before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat and extend tool life, as the TiN coating is not a substitute for proper lubrication on hard alloys. Inspect the cutting edges before use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is present. Follow applicable shop safety practices and equipment manufacturer guidelines for drill speed and feed rate selection.
