The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54052 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to M42 cobalt steel grade and finished with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life in demanding production environments. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and requires less feed force compared to standard 118-degree points. At 3.125 inches overall length with a 2-inch spiral flute, this bit suits bench drill presses, hand drills, and CNC setups where a standard jobber reach is appropriate. Right-hand cut with a regular spiral and tapered web configuration round out the geometry.
This drill bit is rated for stainless steel and steel as primary workpiece materials, making it a go-to choice for HVAC fabricators, pipefitters, sheet-metal workers, and maintenance mechanics who routinely drill through hard alloys. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard 3-jaw drill chucks without any adapter. It conforms to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J specifications, placing it in the heavy-duty tier appropriate for production drilling cycles rather than occasional use. The web-thinned point geometry aids chip evacuation, which is especially useful when drilling deep holes in stainless without coolant-through capability.
Designed as a heavy-duty jobber-length drill bit for use in stainless steel and steel workpieces. Fits any standard 3-jaw drill chuck accepting a straight-cylindrical shank of 5/32 inches diameter.
This bit is installed and removed by a licensed machinist, maintenance tech, or qualified tradesperson using a standard keyed or keyless drill chuck. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operating to prevent runout and premature edge wear. Use appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat, even though this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the cutting edge before each use and replace the bit if chipping or coating wear is visible, as a degraded edge accelerates work-hardening in stainless applications.
