The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54050 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in tough ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built to Series 2550 standards, this bit measures 1/8 inch in diameter with a 2-3/4 inch overall length and a 1-5/8 inch flute length. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and lowers thrust required at entry, making it well suited for production and maintenance drilling. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating increases surface hardness and extends tool life in abrasive materials. The M42 cobalt steel construction provides heat resistance during high-speed or interrupted cuts. This bit is installed by machinists, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, and maintenance trades needing reliable small-diameter drilling in hard stock.
The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54050 is intended for drilling stainless steel and steel as its primary workpiece materials, making it a go-to choice in mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing service environments where stainless fasteners, fittings, and brackets are common. The right-hand spiral flute with web-thinned, tapered web geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation in deep or blind holes. It is sold individually and fits standard 3-jaw drill chucks that accept a 1/8 inch straight-cylindrical shank.
Designed for use in any standard drill chuck accepting a 1/8 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel and steel per NAS 907 Type J specification.
Install in a 3-jaw or collet chuck rated for the spindle speed appropriate to the workpiece material and bit diameter. Secure the workpiece before drilling to prevent rotation or movement. Use cutting fluid when drilling stainless steel to manage heat buildup and extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edge before each use and replace bits showing chipping or excessive wear to maintain hole quality and prevent breakage.
