The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54040 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to wire gauge size 30, it measures 0.1285 inches in diameter with a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and improves hole entry on hard surfaces. The M42 cobalt steel construction and titanium nitride (TiN) coating extend tool life in demanding applications. With a straight-cylindrical shank and regular spiral flute, this bit is compatible with standard drill chucks. It is sized for precision work where tight diameter tolerances are required, holding -0.0007 to 0.0000 inches from nominal.
This bit is built for drilling stainless steel and alloy steels where standard high-speed steel bits fail prematurely. The 2-flute spiral configuration promotes chip evacuation in deep-hole drilling scenarios. The web-thinned, tapered web design reduces thrust requirements and cutting torque. It suits tool-and-die shops, MRO environments, HVAC fabrication, and mechanical contractors who regularly drill through stainless fastener plates, structural steel, and heavy-gauge sheet metal. Series 2550 meets DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, making it appropriate for aerospace and precision industrial work.
Designed for drilling stainless steel and steel workpieces. Straight-cylindrical shank fits standard keyed and keyless drill chucks. Conforms to NAS 907 Type J and DIN 338 specifications for jobber-length cobalt drill bits.
Use in a drill press, hand drill, or CNC spindle equipped with a chuck sized for a 0.1285-inch straight shank. Apply consistent cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat buildup, even though this bit does not have internal coolant-through capability. Reduce feed pressure as the bit breaks through to avoid grabbing. Inspect the cutting edges before each use — cobalt bits can chip if used on hardened or case-hardened surfaces beyond their rated material grade.
