The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54036 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit sized to wire gauge No. 26 (0.1470 inches diameter) with a 135-degree split point. It is TiN (Titanium Nitride) coated and manufactured from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, giving it elevated heat resistance and edge retention compared to standard HSS bits. The overall length is 3.0 inches with a 1-7/8-inch flute length and a straight-cylindrical shank. This bit is suited to production drilling and maintenance work where heat buildup and tool wear are primary concerns. It is installed and used by machinists, pipefitters, maintenance technicians, and other trades requiring precision drilling in hard or abrasive materials.
The 54036 is designed primarily for drilling stainless steel and carbon steel, where its M42 cobalt matrix and TiN coating provide the durability needed to maintain cutting performance through tough, work-hardening alloys. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust force required at the spindle, making it practical for use in both drill press and hand-drill applications where a center punch start is not always feasible. The Series 2550 designation places it in the heavy-duty tier of the CHICAGO-LATROBE catalog, built to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards.
Designed for drilling stainless steel and steel workpieces. Fits any drill chuck accepting a 0.1470-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Rated for use in applications meeting NAS 907 Type J specification requirements.
This bit is installed by machinists and trade professionals using standard drill presses, magnetic drills, or hand-held power drills with appropriate chuck capacity. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck before operation to prevent slippage. Use a cutting fluid or coolant appropriate for the workpiece material to manage heat, particularly when drilling stainless steel. Inspect the cutting edge before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is observed to maintain hole tolerance within the rated -0.0007 to 0.0000 inch range.
