The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54034 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit sized to wire gauge No. 24, with a decimal diameter of 0.1520 inches. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life in tough, abrasive materials. The 135-degree split point reduces walking at startup and lowers feed force, making it well suited to harder workpiece materials. Overall length is 3-1/8 inches, with a 2-inch spiral flute and a straight-cylindrical shank. Right-hand cut with a regular spiral and tapered web. This is a heavy-duty Series 2550 tool intended for professional machining and fabrication environments.
The 54034 is designed for drilling stainless steel and steel, where tool hardness and heat resistance matter most. The M42 cobalt grade retains its hardness at elevated cutting temperatures better than standard M2 HSS bits. TiN coating adds surface hardness and reduces friction. Typical applications include fabrication shops, HVAC sheet metal work involving stainless fittings, plumbing, and general metalworking where a No. 24 wire-gauge hole is required. Coolant-through is not supported, so conventional flood or mist coolant applied externally is the appropriate method for sustained production runs.
Designed as a heavy-duty OEM-style replacement or direct-purchase jobber drill bit for use in standard drill chucks and presses that accept a 0.1520-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for production drilling of stainless steel and steel per NAS 907 Type J and DIN 338 specifications.
This bit is installed by machinists and fabrication professionals using drill presses, CNC machining centers, or hand-held electric drills with a compatible chuck. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck before operation. When drilling stainless steel, use appropriate cutting fluid or external coolant to manage heat buildup and prevent work hardening of the material. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is observed.
