The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54023 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit sized to No. 13 wire gauge (0.1850 inches decimal), built for high-performance drilling in tough ferrous and stainless steel applications. The bit features a 135-degree split point that starts on contact without a center punch and reduces walking on hard surfaces. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating increases surface hardness and extends tool life in abrasive materials. The M42 cobalt high-speed steel substrate handles heat buildup that would degrade standard HSS bits. Overall length is 3.5 inches with a 2-5/16-inch spiral flute and a straight-cylindrical shank at 0.1850 inches diameter. This is a right-hand-cut, two-flute bit rated for heavy-duty use per NAS 907 Type J and DIN 338 standards.
The 54023 is designed for drilling stainless steel, alloy steel, and other hard or work-hardening materials encountered in industrial maintenance, HVAC equipment fabrication, plumbing rough-in, and electrical enclosure work. The Series 2550 designation places this bit in a heavy-duty product line intended for production and job-site drilling where tool life and hole accuracy matter. The tapered web with web thinning reduces thrust requirements when drilling harder stock. The straight-cylindrical shank seats in standard drill chucks without modification, making it compatible with corded and cordless tools already on the truck or shop floor.
Designed for use in any standard drill chuck accepting a 0.1850-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Rated for primary workpiece materials including stainless steel and steel per manufacturer specification.
Install this bit in a keyed or keyless chuck and verify it is fully seated and tightened before use. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat and prevent work hardening at the cutting edge. Operate at the feed rate and speed recommended for cobalt bits in the workpiece material being drilled — excessive speed without adequate feed will dull the cutting edge prematurely. Inspect the bit for chipping or wear after extended use in hard materials and replace when cutting performance degrades.
