The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53940 is a heavy-duty jobber length drill bit designed for drilling steel alloy and other ferrous metals in production and maintenance environments. It carries a wire gauge size of No. 11, which equals 0.1910 inches in decimal, and measures 3.5 inches overall with a 2.3125-inch flute length. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and requires less thrust than a conventional 118-degree point. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating increases surface hardness and extends tool life under high-cycle conditions. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical contractors, as well as machinists and fabricators, reach for this bit when drilling structural steel, brackets, and sheet metal assemblies.
The 53940 fits standard drill chucks using its 0.1910-inch straight cylindrical shank. The parabolic flute geometry evacuates chips aggressively, making it well-suited for deep-hole drilling in steel alloy where chip packing is a concern. Its tapered web and web-thinned point lower cutting resistance at the center of the bit, which reduces heat buildup and prolongs edge life. This bit is sold individually and is intended for use in bench drill presses, magnetic drills, or hand-held power drills wherever a No. 11 wire-gauge hole is required in ferrous material.

Machinists, pipefitters, and electricians typically install this bit in a keyed or keyless chuck on a drill press or hand-held power drill. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and confirm chuck key removal before powering the spindle. Use cutting fluid or a compatible cutting oil when drilling steel alloy to manage heat and extend edge life. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping between uses, as a dull bit increases thrust load and can cause workpiece damage or bit breakage.
