The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53924 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for heavy-duty metal drilling applications. Built from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it offers increased surface hardness and extended tool life compared to uncoated HSS bits. The 135-degree split point allows the bit to self-center on contact, reducing the need for a center punch and minimizing walking on hard surfaces. At 5-7/8 inches overall length with a 4-3/8-inch flute length, it covers the full range of jobber-length drilling tasks. Machinists, fabricators, and trade professionals working with steel alloy stock will find this bit suited to production and maintenance drilling alike.
The 53924 is intended for use in steel alloy workpieces and is rated as a heavy-duty grade bit for demanding shop and field environments. The parabolic flute geometry improves chip evacuation during deep-hole drilling, reducing heat buildup and the risk of chip packing. The straight-cylindrical shank with a 31/64-inch diameter fits standard drill chucks used in drill presses, hand drills, and magnetic base drills. Right-hand cut orientation is standard for conventional drilling setups. This bit does not support coolant-through delivery, so external coolant or cutting fluid application is recommended when drilling steel alloy at sustained feed rates.
Designed as a jobber-length replacement or direct-use drill bit for applications requiring a 31/64-inch diameter hole in steel alloy material, compatible with any standard drill chuck accepting a straight-cylindrical shank up to 31/64 inch in diameter.
Installation of this bit is performed by machinists and trade professionals using drill presses, hand drills, or magnetic base drills. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck before operation and verify chuck key is removed prior to starting. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid or external coolant to the workpiece when drilling steel alloy to manage heat and prolong bit life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
