The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53911 is a heavy-duty jobber length drill bit designed for drilling into steel alloy and similarly tough materials. Built from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction during cutting. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without a center punch, and the parabolic flute profile clears chips efficiently at higher feed rates. At 4.25 inches overall length with a 9/32-inch straight-cylindrical shank, it fits standard drill chucks used by machinists, pipefitters, and HVAC and plumbing techs drilling through structural steel, angle iron, and mechanical components.
This bit is suited for production and maintenance drilling in steel alloy workpieces across residential and light commercial trade applications. Typical scenarios include drilling pilot holes in steel brackets, electrical enclosures, ductwork hangers, pipe hangers, and similar metal fabrication tasks. The parabolic flute geometry and web-thinned tip make it a reliable choice when drilling through harder grades of carbon and alloy steel where standard jobber bits tend to walk or deflect. The Series 150DHT designation identifies it within the CHICAGO-LATROBE heavy-duty TiN-coated line.
Designed as a jobber length replacement or general-purpose drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 9/32-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Rated for steel alloy as the primary workpiece material per Series 150DHT specifications.
Install in a drill press, hand drill, or magnetic drill with a properly sized 3-jaw chuck before energizing the tool. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or secured before drilling to prevent rotation or shifting. Use appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling through steel alloy to extend bit life and maintain cutting edge integrity. Inspect the cutting edge before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is observed.
