The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53884 is a heavy-duty jobber length drill bit designed for drilling into steel alloy and other ferrous materials. It carries a Letter Q designation, corresponding to a decimal diameter of 0.3320 inches, and features a 135-degree split point for self-centering penetration with reduced walking on hard surfaces. The bit is manufactured from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating that extends tool life in high-cycle production and maintenance applications. A parabolic flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation, reducing heat buildup and the need for frequent retraction. This bit is sized and configured for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and metalworking professionals.
The 53884 fits standard jobber length applications in metal fabrication shops, industrial maintenance environments, and production drilling operations. Its straight-cylindrical shank seats directly into keyed or keyless drill chucks on drill presses, hand drills, and magnetic base drills without adapters. The 135-degree split point performs best in harder steel alloys where conventional 118-degree points tend to skate. Overall length of 4.75 inches and a flute length of 3.4375 inches provide adequate reach for through-hole work in stock up to approximately 3 inches thick.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard tooling option for jobber length drill bit applications in steel alloy machining. Compatible with any drill chuck accepting a 0.3320-inch straight-cylindrical shank, consistent with Series 150DHT tooling standards.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with metalworking practices. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before drilling. Always power down the drill press or disconnect the hand tool before changing bits. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant on steel alloy workpieces to manage heat, even though this bit does not support through-coolant delivery.
