The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53640 is a cobalt reduced shank drill bit engineered for demanding portable drilling applications in metal fabrication, maintenance, and industrial service work. The bit measures 5/8 inch in diameter with a 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to fit standard 1/2 inch drill chucks while cutting a larger-diameter hole. The 118-degree split point promotes fast penetration and reduces walking on contact without a center punch. At 6 inches overall length with a 3-1/8 inch flute length, this is a general-purpose bit suited to tradespeople drilling cast iron, carbon steel, alloy steel, and similar ferrous materials on the job.
The 53640 is designed for portable drilling in field and shop environments. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron and steel, with rated secondary applications in alloy steel and carbon steel. The coated finish on the cobalt steel body helps extend tool life under the heat generated by drilling hard ferrous materials without coolant. Two right-hand spiral flutes with a regular spiral configuration evacuate chips efficiently during through-hole drilling. The reduced shank design makes this bit compatible with standard 1/2 inch capacity chucks even though the cutting diameter is 5/8 inch.
Designed for use in portable and stationary drilling equipment fitted with a 1/2 inch capacity chuck. Rated for general-purpose drilling in cast iron, steel, alloy steel, and carbon steel workpieces. Part of the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 190C-TN reduced shank cobalt drill line.
Install and remove drill bits only with the drill unplugged or the power source isolated. Secure the reduced shank firmly in the chuck and verify concentricity before beginning a cut. No coolant is required per rated application, but appropriate PPE including eye protection and gloves should be worn when drilling ferrous materials. Follow applicable workplace safety codes when operating portable drilling equipment.
