The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53480 is a reduced shank cobalt drill bit engineered for demanding portable drilling applications in metal fabrication, maintenance, and industrial trades. Part of the Series 190C line, it features a 1-1/4 inch cutting diameter with a reduced 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing use in standard 1/2 inch drill chucks without requiring a larger chuck capacity. The 118-degree split point promotes self-centering and reduces walking on entry. The cobalt construction provides elevated heat resistance and edge retention compared to standard high-speed steel, making it well suited for harder ferrous materials encountered in trade work.
This bit is designed for portable drilling operations on cast iron and steel, including alloy steel and carbon steel workpieces. The reduced shank configuration is the defining feature — it allows a 1-1/4 inch diameter hole to be drilled using a standard 1/2 inch portable drill or drill press without a specialty chuck. Typical applications include structural fabrication, mechanical maintenance, pipe fitting prep work, and on-site drilling in HVAC, plumbing, and general mechanical trades where large-diameter holes are needed in ferrous stock.
Designed for use in standard 1/2 inch drill chucks on portable drills and drill presses. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel; secondary compatibility includes alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Coolant is not required for this bit configuration.
Secure the reduced shank firmly in a 1/2 inch drill chuck and verify chuck key tightening before operation. Use consistent, moderate feed pressure — cobalt bits perform best with steady feed rather than intermittent pressure that causes rubbing and heat buildup. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is evident. Always wear appropriate eye protection and secure the workpiece to prevent movement during drilling.
