The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53456 is a reduced shank cobalt drill bit designed for portable drilling operations in ferrous metals and hard alloys. The bit measures 7/8 inch in diameter with a 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to chuck into standard 1/2 inch capacity drill chucks despite the larger cutting diameter. The 118-degree split point promotes accurate starts and reduces walking without a center punch. Cobalt construction provides heat resistance needed when cutting cast iron, carbon steel, and alloy steel. Overall length is 6 inches with a 3-1/8 inch flute length. Right-hand spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently during through-hole and deep drilling passes.
This drill bit is suited for maintenance, fabrication, and machine shops where portable drilling into steel and cast iron is routine. The reduced shank design extends the usable diameter range of 1/2 inch chuck equipment. The Series 190C geometry targets general-purpose applications where consistent hole tolerance and tool life in ferrous materials are priorities. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron and steel, with secondary suitability for alloy steel and carbon steel. No coolant is required, making it practical for field and portable use without coolant delivery systems.
Designed for use in portable drills and drill presses equipped with a 1/2 inch capacity chuck. Suitable for drilling cast iron, steel, alloy steel, and carbon steel workpieces as an OEM-style general-purpose reduced shank drill bit in the Series 190C line.
A licensed machinist or qualified tradesperson should secure the 1/2 inch shank firmly in the chuck before operation. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent rotation during drilling. Confirm drill press or portable drill speed settings are appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter before starting. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the split point or flute geometry is damaged.
