The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53444 is a cobalt reduced shank drill bit designed for demanding metal drilling applications in portable and stationary setups. The bit carries an 11/16-inch cutting diameter with a reduced 1/2-inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to seat in standard 1/2-inch chucks. The 118-degree split point geometry promotes fast penetration and reduces walking on entry without a center punch. Built from cobalt tool steel and finished with a protective coating, the 53444 handles elevated heat generated during cutting in ferrous materials. Flute length measures 3-1/8 inches with a 6-inch overall length. This is a two-flute, right-hand cut bit in the Series 190C line.
The 53444 is suited for general-purpose portable drilling in cast iron, steel, alloy steel, and carbon steel. Machinists, maintenance technicians, fabricators, and field tradespeople use reduced shank bits when the required hole diameter exceeds the capacity of a 1/2-inch chuck. The cobalt construction makes this bit a practical choice where high-speed steel bits wear prematurely due to work hardening or sustained heat buildup. It is packaged and sold individually.
Designed for use in any 1/2-inch keyed or keyless drill chuck. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel; secondary compatible materials include alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Rated for general-purpose tool performance in portable drilling applications.
Secure the reduced shank fully into the chuck jaws before tightening to prevent slippage and runout. Always wear eye protection and secure the workpiece before drilling. When drilling hard ferrous materials, use the lowest practical RPM and apply consistent feed pressure to avoid overheating the cutting edge. No coolant system is required for this bit, but intermittent relief of the bit from the cut helps dissipate heat during extended use.
