The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53432 is a reduced shank cobalt drill bit designed for portable drilling and general-purpose metal removal in trade and industrial applications. Built from cobalt tool material, it handles cast iron, steel, alloy steel, and carbon steel without the heat buildup that degrades standard high-speed steel bits. The bit measures 0.5 inches in diameter with a matching 0.5-inch straight-cylindrical shank, an overall length of 6 inches, and a 3.125-inch flute length. The 118-degree split point starts on contact and reduces walking without a center punch on most workpieces. This bit is sold individually and suits machinists, pipefitters, ironworkers, and HVAC and plumbing technicians who drill through ferrous materials in the field.
The 53432 fits portable drill applications where a reduced shank is required to chuck a 0.5-inch diameter bit in a standard 3/8-inch or smaller chuck. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel. Secondary materials include alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. The Series 190C designation places it in a consistent production line, making replacement and reorder straightforward for shops that stock by series. The right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional drilling setups. No coolant supply is required for general-purpose use, though flood or mist coolant can extend tool life in sustained production runs.

Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in the drill chuck before operating and verify chuck key tightening before each use. Wear appropriate eye protection and secure the workpiece to prevent rotation during drilling. For best results in hard ferrous materials, use cutting fluid and moderate feed pressure to avoid overheating the cutting edges. Inspect the split point for chipping or wear before reuse; a damaged point increases thrust and reduces hole accuracy.
