The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53200 is a taper shank drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in metal fabrication, machining, and industrial maintenance applications. Built from high-speed steel with an oxide finish, this bit measures 1-9/16 inches (1.5625 inches decimal) in diameter and carries a 5MT (Morse Taper No. 5) shank for secure seating in compatible drill press spindles and machine tool holders. The 118-degree standard point angle and web-thinned tip reduce thrust requirements and promote accurate starting without center-punching on prepared surfaces. At 16-5/8 inches overall length with a 9-5/8 inches flute length, the 53200 provides reach and chip evacuation suitable for deep-hole work in production environments.
This drill bit is intended for general-purpose drilling in ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including steel, cast iron, and aluminum. The 5MT shank fits heavy-duty drill presses, radial arm drills, and milling machines equipped with a No. 5 Morse Taper spindle or socket. Right-hand cutting direction with regular spiral flutes supports standard clockwise spindle operation. It is most commonly installed by machinists, tool-and-die professionals, and industrial maintenance technicians working in shop or field environments where large-diameter hole production is required.
Designed as an OEM-style general-purpose taper shank drill bit for use in drill presses, radial arm drills, and milling machines equipped with a No. 5 Morse Taper (5MT) spindle or taper socket adapter.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or industrial maintenance technicians familiar with Morse Taper tooling. Before inserting or removing the bit, power down and lock out the machine spindle per applicable OSHA lockout/tagout procedures. Clean the taper shank and spindle bore of chips, oil, and debris before seating to ensure full contact and prevent slippage under load. Never use a drill bit larger than the rated capacity of the machine spindle, and verify that the taper designation matches the machine socket before applying drive force.
