The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53168 is a taper shank drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in metal and general-purpose machining applications. Built from high speed steel with an oxide finish, it measures 1.0625 inches in diameter and carries a No. 3 Morse taper shank for secure seating in compatible drill presses, lathes, and machining centers. The 118-degree standard point with web thinning reduces thrust and improves centering on entry. At 11.25 inches overall length with a 6.625-inch spiral flute, it handles deep-hole applications where shorter bits fall short. Right-hand cutting direction and a regular spiral type suit the majority of general-purpose ferrous and non-ferrous drilling tasks.
This bit fits production machining, tool room work, and maintenance environments where large-diameter hole making is routine. The 3MT shank seats directly into matching taper sockets on drill presses, turret lathes, and radial arm drills without an adapter. The oxide finish provides light lubricity and corrosion resistance during storage and intermittent use. It is sized for shops and tradespeople drilling 1-1/16-inch holes in steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar materials where a general-purpose HSS bit meets the job requirement.
Designed for use in drill presses, lathes, radial arm drills, and machining centers equipped with a No. 3 Morse taper socket. Part of the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 110 general-purpose taper shank drill line.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with Morse taper tooling. Clean the taper shank and socket thoroughly before seating to ensure full contact and prevent slippage under load. Use a proper drift and drift slot to remove the bit safely — never strike the spindle housing to dislodge the taper. Verify spindle speed against recommended surface footage for the material being drilled before running at full depth.
