The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53166 is a taper shank drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in metal, steel, and similar materials. Built from high speed steel with an oxide finish, it provides good wear resistance and heat tolerance during general-purpose machining operations. The bit features a 118-degree standard point angle with a web-thinned tip to reduce thrust and improve chip starting. At 1.0313 inches in diameter with an 11.125-inch overall length, it fits morse taper spindles and drill press quills sized for a 3MT shank. Machinists, tool-and-die techs, and industrial maintenance crews are the primary users.
This bit is suited for production drilling and maintenance machining in shops running drill presses, lathes, milling machines, or radial arm drills equipped with a No. 3 Morse taper socket. The 6.5-inch spiral flute length handles deeper hole applications where a straight shank bit would be impractical. General-purpose right-hand cutting action makes it compatible with conventional spindle rotation. The Series 110 designation places it in CHICAGO-LATROBE's standard general-purpose line, appropriate for a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials.
Designed for use in drill presses, lathes, milling machines, and radial arm drills equipped with a No. 3 Morse taper (3MT) socket or sleeve.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians. Power down and lock out the machine before inserting or removing the taper shank. Seat the taper fully into the spindle socket using a firm seating drift or by hand pressure before engaging the draw bolt where applicable. Inspect the taper and socket for nicks or debris that could cause runout before each use.
