The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53151 is a taper shank drill bit designed for accurate, high-torque drilling in metal fabrication, maintenance, and industrial machining applications. Built from high speed steel with an oxide finish, it measures 0.7969 inches (51/64 inch) in diameter and carries a 3 Morse Taper shank for secure seating in compatible drill press spindles and milling machine quills. The 118-degree standard point geometry with web thinning reduces entry force and improves centering on flat stock. Right-hand spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently during through-hole drilling. This bit is a general-purpose tool suited for machinists, maintenance mechanics, and tool-room technicians working with steel, cast iron, and similar materials.
The 53151 is sized for applications requiring a 51/64-inch bore, commonly encountered in shaft fitting, bushing installation, and structural fabrication. The 3MT taper shank integrates directly with drill presses, lathes, and milling machines equipped with a No. 3 Morse Taper socket, eliminating the need for a chuck. At 10.75 inches overall length with a 6.125-inch flute length, it provides adequate reach for moderate-depth holes in production and job-shop environments. The oxide surface treatment provides mild corrosion resistance and reduces friction during cutting.
Designed for use in drill presses, lathes, and milling machines fitted with a No. 3 Morse Taper spindle socket. Suitable for general-purpose drilling in steel, cast iron, and similar ferrous materials.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance mechanics with access to a No. 3 Morse Taper spindle. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or removing the taper shank. Clean both the shank and the spindle socket thoroughly before insertion to ensure full taper contact and prevent slippage under load. Use a drift key and dead-blow mallet to remove the bit from the spindle rather than applying side force to the bit body.
