The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53144 is a taper shank drill bit designed for drilling precise holes in metal and general-purpose shop materials. Built from high speed steel with an oxide finish, this bit measures 11/16 inch (0.6875 inches) in diameter and carries a 2MT (Morse Taper 2) shank for secure seating in taper-socket spindles and drill press quills. The 118-degree standard point geometry suits a wide range of common drilling applications. The web-thinned construction reduces thrust at entry, making it easier to start and feed through workpieces without excessive pressure.
This bit is suited for production and maintenance drilling in metalworking shops, tool rooms, and industrial maintenance environments. The 2MT shank seats directly in drill presses, lathes, and milling machine spindles equipped with a matching Morse taper socket. Right-hand spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole drilling in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It is typically installed and used by machinists, millwrights, and maintenance mechanics working with machine tools.
Designed for use in drill presses, lathes, and milling machines fitted with a No. 2 Morse Taper (2MT) socket. Verify spindle taper designation before installation.
Installation is performed by machinists or qualified machine operators. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the taper shank. Clean both the shank and socket bore thoroughly to ensure full taper contact and prevent slipping under load. Use a proper drift and drift slot to remove the bit — never strike the shank directly against the socket to eject it.
