The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53138 is a taper shank drill bit designed for general-purpose metal drilling in machine shop and industrial environments. Built from high speed steel with an oxide finish, this bit measures 19/32 inch (0.5938 inches) in diameter and features a 118-degree standard point angle with a web-thinned tip for easier penetration and reduced thrust. The 2MT (Morse Taper 2) shank seats directly into compatible drill press spindles, lathes, and milling machine tailstocks without a chuck. Right-hand spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole operations. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance mechanics are the primary installers of this bit.
This bit suits general-purpose drilling in steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar materials. The 2MT taper shank makes it well suited for floor-standing drill presses, radial arm drills, and engine lathes with a tailstock bore that accepts Morse Taper 2. The 8.75-inch overall length and 4.875-inch flute length provide adequate reach for production and maintenance drilling tasks in both job shop and industrial maintenance settings. It is sold individually and is intended for use in fixed machine setups rather than handheld applications.
Designed for use in any machine spindle, lathe tailstock, or drill press quill that accepts a Morse Taper 2 (2MT) shank. No specific OEM model compatibility was provided by the manufacturer for this part.
Installation is performed by machinists or qualified machine operators. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or removing the taper shank. Clean both the shank and spindle bore thoroughly before insertion — debris or chips in the taper socket will prevent proper seating and can cause runout. Never use a hammer directly on the bit body to drive the taper; use a proper drift key and drift slot on the spindle to release the bit safely. Coolant-through is not supported on this bit, so external coolant or cutting fluid should be applied as appropriate for the material and feed rate.
