The CHICAGO-LATROBE 52581 is an 18-piece tap drill set designed for threading and hole preparation in metal fabrication, maintenance, and repair applications. The set covers tap thread sizes from 6-32 up to 1/2-13 and drill sizes from 5/16 inches through 27/64 inches, including fractional, letter, and wire gauge sizes. All taps are high speed steel with a bright finish and plug chamfer, and all drills are also high speed steel. The set stores in a metal case, making it practical for shop use or field service. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and metalworking tradespeople are the primary users.
This set is suited for general-purpose threading work in residential and commercial maintenance environments, machine shops, and industrial facilities. It covers the most common unified coarse and unified fine thread sizes encountered in everyday repair and fabrication tasks. The nine included tap sizes are 6-32, 8-32, 10-24, 10-32, 1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16, 7/16-14, and 1/2-13. The nine matching drill sizes are number 36, number 29, number 25, number 21, number 7, letter F, 5/16 inches, letter U, and 27/64 inches.
Designed as a general-purpose tap drill set compatible with standard hand tap wrenches, T-handle tap wrenches, and drill press or CNC setups accepting standard straight-shank drill bits. Thread sizes included are unified inch standard (UNC and UNF), suitable for common fastener applications in steel, aluminum, brass, and similar machinable materials.
Tapping operations should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with proper cutting speeds, lubrication, and chip-clearing technique for the material being tapped. Always secure the workpiece before drilling or tapping. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the base material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Inspect each tap for wear or damage before use to avoid breakage in the workpiece.
