The CHICAGO-LATROBE 52478 is a reduced shank drill bit designed for portable drilling applications across a wide range of materials. It features a 1-7/32 inch (1.2188 inch decimal) cutting diameter paired with a 1/2 inch Weldon shank, allowing use in standard 1/2 inch chucks even at larger bit diameters. The bit is manufactured from high speed steel and carries a coated finish for improved wear resistance. With a 118-degree split point and right-hand spiral flute geometry, it delivers consistent starts and clean penetration in both ferrous and non-ferrous stock. Licensed tradespeople and skilled machinists install this bit in portable drilling setups on the job site or at the bench.
The 52478 is suited for general-purpose drilling in wood, carbon steel, alloy steel, and cast iron. The reduced shank design makes it practical for portable drills with 1/2 inch chuck capacity when larger-diameter holes are required. The 3-number flat Weldon shank prevents bit rotation under torque load, which is especially valuable during heavy-duty drilling in harder ferrous materials. At 6 inches overall length with a 3-1/8 inch flute, it provides adequate depth capacity for most structural and fabrication drilling tasks encountered in field or shop conditions.
Designed as a general-purpose reduced shank drill bit compatible with portable drills and drill presses equipped with a 1/2 inch chuck. Suitable for drilling wood, carbon steel, alloy steel, and cast iron workpieces. Part of the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 190F line.
Installation is performed by machinists, metalworkers, carpenters, or general tradespeople using portable drills or drill presses. Always power down and disconnect the drill before inserting or removing the bit. Secure the Weldon shank fully in the chuck, engaging all three flats to prevent slippage under load. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or damage before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is observed.
