The CHICAGO-LATROBE 52474 is a reduced shank drill bit built from high speed steel (HSS) for general-purpose portable drilling applications. The bit measures 1-5/32 inches (1.1562 inches decimal) in cutting diameter with a 1/2-inch Weldon shank, making it compatible with standard 1/2-inch chucks while delivering a larger bore diameter. The 118-degree split point geometry promotes clean entry and reduces walking on startup. Overall length is 6 inches with a 3-1/8-inch flute length, and the coated finish provides added wear resistance during extended use. This is a Series 190F bit suited for trades that require oversized hole drilling without upgrading chuck capacity.
The 52474 is designed for portable drilling operations across a range of materials including wood, alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. The right-hand spiral flute with regular helix efficiently clears chips during through-hole drilling. With a Weldon shank featuring three flats and a 2.25-inch shank length, the bit seats securely in side-locking tool holders, reducing slip under load. This makes it practical for HVAC technicians, pipefitters, electricians, and general contractors who need to drill large-diameter holes through structural materials in the field.
Designed as a general-purpose reduced shank drill bit compatible with 1/2-inch Weldon-style side-lock tool holders and standard 1/2-inch keyed or keyless chucks used in portable and bench drilling applications.
Installation should be performed by a qualified tradesperson familiar with portable drilling equipment and proper tool-holder torquing procedures. Secure the Weldon shank fully into the side-lock holder before engaging set screws to prevent axial pullout under load. Always wear appropriate eye protection and secure the workpiece before drilling. Follow applicable workplace safety codes and equipment manufacturer guidelines for drill press and portable drill operation.
