The CHICAGO-LATROBE 52472 is a reduced shank twist drill bit designed for portable drilling operations in metal, cast iron, and wood. It measures 1-1/8 inches in diameter with a 1/2-inch Weldon shank, making it compatible with standard 1/2-inch chuck setups even at larger cutting diameters. Constructed from high speed steel with a coated finish, this bit holds up under the friction and heat generated during heavy-stock removal. The 118-degree split point geometry promotes accurate entry and reduces walking on startup. The Series 190F designation identifies this as a general-purpose production bit suited for trade and industrial shop environments.
This bit is built for portable drilling applications across a range of workpiece materials including wood, alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. The reduced shank design allows a larger-diameter cutting head to be driven by a standard 1/2-inch capacity drill or drill press without requiring an oversized chuck. The Weldon flat shank with three flats resists slippage under torque load, which is critical when drilling through harder metals at this diameter. Typical users include millwrights, ironworkers, pipefitters, and maintenance machinists who need to bore large-diameter holes in the field or in a shop bay.
Designed for use with 1/2-inch capacity portable drills and drill presses equipped to accept a Weldon-style shank. Suitable for drilling wood, alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron as identified in Series 190F general-purpose tooling.
Secure the Weldon shank fully in the chuck, engaging the set screw against one of the three flats to prevent rotation under load. Ensure the drill or drill press is powered off and locked out before changing bits. Use appropriate cutting fluid when drilling hardened alloy steel or cast iron to manage heat and extend tool life. Operators should wear appropriate PPE including eye protection whenever drilling operations are in progress.
