The CHICAGO-LATROBE 52449 is a reduced shank drill bit designed for general-purpose portable drilling in a wide range of materials. It carries a 49/64 inch (0.7656 inch decimal) cutting diameter paired with a 1/2 inch Weldon shank, allowing it to run in standard 1/2 inch chuck equipment without requiring a larger chuck capacity. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, the 52449 features a 118-degree split point that reduces walking on entry and lowers the thrust needed to start a hole. Two spiral flutes in a regular helix clear chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole work. This bit is suited for use by machinists, millwrights, and general trade technicians who need a reliable reduced-shank option for field or shop drilling.
The 52449 is intended for portable drilling applications across a broad material range. Primary workpiece material is wood, with secondary suitability for alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, and wood in general fabrication or maintenance contexts. The Weldon shank with three flats resists rotation in the chuck under high torque, making it a practical choice for heavy-feed drilling where a standard round shank might slip. The Series 190F designation places it within a well-established general-purpose jobber and reduced-shank product line.
Designed as an OEM-style reduced shank drill bit compatible with portable drilling equipment fitted with a 1/2 inch Weldon-style chuck or drill holder. Suitable for general-purpose use in wood, alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron workpieces as noted in manufacturer specifications.
Install and removal should be performed by a qualified machinist or technician with the drilling equipment fully powered down and secured. Seat the Weldon shank fully into the holder and tighten all set screws against the flats before operation to prevent shank rotation. Verify chuck or holder capacity matches the 1/2 inch shank diameter before mounting. Inspect the cutting edge for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if diameter tolerance has degraded beyond the specified +0.0000 to -0.0012 inch range.
