The CHICAGO-LATROBE 52442 is a reduced shank twist drill bit engineered for general-purpose portable drilling across a wide range of materials. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, it features a 21/32 inch (0.6562 inch) cutting diameter paired with a 1/2 inch Weldon shank, allowing it to chuck into standard 1/2 inch capacity drill drivers and magnetic base drills without requiring a larger chuck. The 118-degree split point promotes self-centering at entry and reduces walking on flat or curved surfaces. With a 6 inch overall length and a 3-1/8 inch flute length, the bit clears chips efficiently during deep-hole passes. Two spiral flutes in a regular helix configuration move material out of the cut while maintaining rigidity.
This bit is suited for portable drilling applications in metalworking, fabrication, and carpentry environments. The reduced shank design is particularly useful when a larger diameter bit must be used with a 1/2 inch chuck. The three-flat Weldon shank prevents rotation in the chuck under torque, making it appropriate for production drilling, maintenance work, and field service on structural steel, cast iron, carbon steel, alloy steel, and wood. The Series 190F designation places it in CHICAGO-LATROBE's general-purpose coated HSS lineup.
Designed as a general-purpose reduced shank drill bit compatible with portable drills and drill presses fitted with 1/2 inch capacity chucks or Weldon-style tool holders. Rated for use in wood, carbon steel, alloy steel, and cast iron workpieces.
Installation is performed by machinists, fabricators, maintenance technicians, and general tradespeople. Secure the Weldon shank fully into the chuck or tool holder, engaging the flats against the set screw to prevent slippage under load. Always power down the drill and disconnect power before changing bits. Use appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling ferrous metals to reduce heat buildup and extend tool life.
