The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50894 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in cast iron and steel. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers strong heat resistance and edge retention under demanding production conditions. The bit measures 0.0995 inches in diameter (Wire Size 39) with an overall length of 1-13/16 inches and a flute length of 13/16 inches. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and minimizes the need for a center punch. This is a Series 559 bit intended for machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and metalworking professionals running screw machine or short-hole drilling operations.
This bit is suited for production drilling in residential and commercial metalworking environments where hole accuracy and tool life are priorities. Its compact screw machine length provides rigidity in tight setups and machine-mounted applications. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron and steel. The right-hand spiral flute geometry evacuates chips efficiently, making it appropriate for repetitive drilling cycles on CNC equipment, drill presses, and screw machines. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard chucks without modification.
Designed for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks on screw machines, drill presses, and CNC machining centers. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel. Meets ISO standards for drill bit geometry and tolerancing.
Installation and use of this bit should be performed by qualified machinists or metalworking technicians familiar with cutting tool setup and machine operation. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before drilling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for steel and cast iron applications to preserve edge life, noting this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the cutting edge for wear or chipping between uses, particularly in high-cycle production runs.
