The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50854 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for high-demand metal drilling applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers heat resistance and edge retention that standard HSS bits cannot match. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and lowers thrust at entry, making it well suited for harder work materials. At 0.404 inches in diameter and 3-5/16 inches overall length, this stub-length bit provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length equivalents. It is sized as Letter Y and carries a diameter tolerance of +0.0000 to -0.0010 inches. Licensed HVAC technicians, machinists, pipefitters, and mechanical contractors install this bit in drill presses and hand drills for precision hole-making in ferrous metals.
This bit is rated for primary use in cast iron and steel, making it appropriate for industrial maintenance, mechanical contracting, and fabrication work where tool longevity under heat and feed pressure is a priority. The screw machine length format is a common choice in sheet metal shops and mechanical rooms where clearance is limited and bit deflection must be minimized. The regular spiral flute with web-thinned, parallel web geometry promotes chip evacuation in blind and through holes in dense materials. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters.
Designed for use in steel and cast iron workpieces across a diameter range of 0.4000 to 0.4500 inches. Fits any standard drill chuck accepting a straight-cylindrical shank. Meets ISO standards as noted in Series 559 heavy-duty specifications.
Install in a calibrated drill press or hand drill with a properly sized chuck before beginning any drilling operation. Secure the workpiece firmly to prevent movement during cutting. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel to extend bit life, noting that this bit does not support internal coolant-through delivery. Follow applicable workplace safety standards when operating rotary cutting tools.
