The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50829 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in tough ferrous materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers the heat resistance and edge retention needed for sustained use in cast iron, steel, and other hard workpiece materials. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and lowers entry force, allowing cleaner starts without a center punch. At 0.5 inches in diameter with an overall length of 3.75 inches, this stub-length bit provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length drills, making it well-suited for demanding production and maintenance applications. It is installed by machinists, millwrights, pipefitters, and industrial maintenance technicians.
This bit is designed for screw machine and production drilling environments where rigidity, accuracy, and durability are priorities. It performs in both handheld and drill press setups and is appropriate for drilling cast iron and steel in fabrication shops, maintenance facilities, and industrial job sites. The web-thinned parallel web configuration reduces thrust load, extending both bit life and tool performance in heavy-duty applications. It cuts right-hand with a regular spiral flute and a straight cylindrical shank for standard chuck compatibility.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit bit for standard 3-jaw chucks and drill presses accepting a straight cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron and steel per Series 559 specifications.
This drill bit is installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals using standard drill presses, lathes, or handheld power drills with a compatible chuck. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped before drilling and that the chuck is tightened fully on the straight cylindrical shank. Use appropriate cutting fluid for steel and cast iron to manage heat buildup and extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
