The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50731 is a straight-shank, extra-length high speed steel drill bit designed for long-reach drilling applications in metal fabrication and maintenance environments. Built to Series 120X specifications, this bit features a 118-degree notched point, a web-thinned and tapered web configuration, and an oxide finish that provides basic lubricity and corrosion resistance during operation. The two-flute spiral design clears chips efficiently through deep or hard-to-access bores. At 10 inches overall length with a 7.5-inch flute length, this bit extends reach well beyond what a standard jobber-length drill can achieve. Machinists, pipefitters, ironworkers, and millwrights regularly use bits in this class for structural steel, cast iron, and deep-hole work.
The 50731 is suited for production and maintenance drilling in ferrous materials, specifically cast iron and steel. Its extended overall length makes it practical for applications where the workpiece geometry prevents a standard drill from reaching the target bore location. The 0.2344-inch diameter corresponds closely to a 15/64-inch bore, commonly used for tap drilling and clearance hole work in steel plate and structural members. Right-hand cutting direction and a straight cylindrical shank allow this bit to seat in standard three-jaw drill chucks across a range of drill presses, magnetic base drills, and hand-held power tools.
Designed as a general-purpose extra-length drill bit for right-hand drilling in cast iron and steel. Primary workpiece materials listed by the manufacturer are cast iron and steel.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists, millwrights, or trade professionals familiar with metal drilling operations. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and confirm the shank is fully seated and tightened in the chuck before powering on the drill. Use appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling steel to extend bit life and maintain hole tolerance. Eye protection and hearing protection are standard PPE for all drilling operations involving metal.
