The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50730 is an extra length, high speed steel twist drill bit designed for long reach drilling applications in metal fabrication and maintenance environments. Built to Series 120X specifications, this bit features a 118-degree notched point with web thinning for easier starting and reduced thrust on entry. The oxide finish provides a basic level of lubricity and heat resistance during drilling. Cutting direction is right hand with a regular spiral and tapered web configuration. Two spiral flutes channel chips away from the cutting zone. This bit is sized at 0.2344 inches in diameter with a straight-cylindrical shank of equal diameter, suited for use in standard drill chucks.
This drill bit is intended for long reach applications where standard length bits cannot access the workpiece. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron and steel, making it well suited for HVAC equipment fabrication, structural steel work, plumbing rough-in, and general mechanical maintenance. The 8-inch overall length and 5.5-inch flute length allow the bit to bore into deep cavities, recessed channels, and confined structural members that shorter bits cannot reach. Machinists, pipefitters, ironworkers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users of this style of extended reach drill.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and general-purpose extended length drill bit for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks compatible with a 0.2344-inch shank diameter.
This bit is installed by a machinist, ironworker, pipefitter, or maintenance technician using a standard keyed or keyless drill chuck rated for the shank diameter. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation to prevent slippage or wobble during cutting. Use appropriate cutting fluid when drilling cast iron or steel to extend bit life and reduce heat buildup. Inspect the cutting edges and point for wear or chipping before each use, and do not apply excessive side load to the extended shank as this can cause deflection or breakage.
