The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50460 is an extra length high speed steel drill bit designed for long-reach drilling applications where a standard-length bit cannot access the workpiece. The bit measures 1/8 inch (0.1250 inches) in diameter with a 10-inch overall length and a 7.5-inch flute length, providing substantial reach into deep cavities, stacked materials, or confined bore locations. A 118-degree notched drill point and web-thinned tapered web reduce entry force and improve chip clearance. The oxide finish provides mild corrosion resistance during storage and use. This bit belongs to the Series 120X line and suits machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians who require precision drilling with extended reach.
The 50460 is suited for drilling cast iron and steel in applications where depth-to-diameter ratio exceeds what a jobber-length or screw-machine-length bit can handle. Typical scenarios include drilling through thick plate, structural sections, long fixtures, or assemblies where tool access is restricted. The straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard 3-jaw drill chucks on bench drills, drill presses, and hand drills. Right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional drilling setups. Secure the shank fully in a 3-jaw chuck before drilling and verify the bit runs true to minimize deflection across the extended length. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel to extend tool life, as coolant-through is not supported by this bit design. Reduce feed rate relative to jobber-length bits of the same diameter to compensate for increased bit flex at depth. Always wear appropriate eye protection and secure the workpiece before drilling operations.
