The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50418 is a taper length, straight-shank drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metalworking applications. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, it features a 0.3390-inch diameter — letter size R — and a standard 118-degree split point. The spiral flute geometry is right-hand cut with a tapered web configuration and web thinning for improved chip evacuation and reduced thrust. With a flute length of 4.125 inches and an overall length of 6.5 inches, this bit falls in the taper length category, giving it greater reach than jobber-length bits without sacrificing rigidity. It is suited to machine tool spindles in production or job-shop environments.
This bit is intended for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. The taper length format makes it well-suited for through-hole drilling in thicker workpieces or applications where a jobber-length bit cannot reach. It fits standard drill chucks and collet holders accepting a 0.3390-inch straight shank. Series 120 identifies the CHICAGO-LATROBE product family for general-purpose taper length HSS drills. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians in industrial and fabrication settings are the primary users.
Designed for use with standard drill chucks and collet systems accepting a 0.3390-inch straight shank. Suitable for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron in general-purpose machining applications.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using drill presses, CNC machining centers, or hand-held magnetic drill units. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation and confirm runout is within acceptable tolerance for the application. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing bits. Follow applicable shop safety standards and wear appropriate eye and face protection during drilling operations.
