The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50404 is a taper length, straight-shank twist drill bit designed for general-purpose hole-making in metal. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, this Series 120 bit features a 118-degree standard point angle and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration that reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation at the drill tip. The bit measures 0.2460 inches in diameter with a total overall length of 6.125 inches and a spiral flute length of 3.75 inches. Right-hand cut spiral flutes clear chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole drilling operations. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance trades rely on this geometry for production and repair work alike.
This drill bit is suited for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron in both shop and field applications. The straight shank diameter of 0.2460 inches fits standard drill chucks on bench drill presses, magnetic drills, and hand-held electric drills. The taper length body provides additional flute length compared to a jobber-length bit, making it useful when drilling deeper holes or when working past obstructions. General-purpose grade construction makes it appropriate for moderate-duty production runs and maintenance drilling tasks.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.2460-inch straight shank. Suitable for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron workpieces in general-purpose machining and maintenance applications.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a drill press, magnetic drill, or portable electric drill. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before drilling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel to extend tool life, even though this bit does not feature through-coolant capability. Follow applicable shop safety practices including workpiece clamping and eye protection.
