The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50316 is a taper length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a coated finish, this bit features a 118-degree standard point angle and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration that reduces thrust during entry. The spiral flute runs 3 inches in length, and the overall length measures 5-3/8 inches. The straight shank measures 0.1470 inches in diameter, corresponding to wire gauge size 26. Licensed HVAC, electrical, and mechanical trade professionals use this bit for field and shop drilling in metal fabrication and equipment service applications.
This drill bit is suited for residential and commercial trade work where precise, clean holes are needed in ferrous metals. Typical applications include drilling pilot holes in sheet metal enclosures, equipment mounting brackets, and structural steel components. The right-hand cut and regular spiral flute pattern provide efficient chip evacuation in the materials it is rated for. Its taper length profile offers extra reach compared to a jobber-length bit, making it useful in moderate-depth drilling scenarios where a jobber bit falls short.
Rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Compatible with standard drill chucks accepting a 0.1470-inch straight shank. Part of the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 120 taper length drill bit line.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified tradespeople familiar with metalworking drill practices. Secure the workpiece and ensure the drill chuck is properly tightened before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling ferrous metals to manage heat and prolong bit life, noting that this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the bit for wear or damage before each use and replace if the cutting edges are chipped or the coating is heavily worn.
